Hand-carved Shillelagh (4)

£80.00Price
  • Inspired by the ancient Irish tradition of the shillelagh, these hand-carved walking sticks are crafted from locally sourced Hazel, a tree long revered in Celtic mythology as a symbol of wisdom, creativity and hidden knowledge.

Each piece begins with a carefully selected branch whose natural curves, textures and markings guide the carving process. Rather than imposing a predetermined design, artist Terry works in dialogue with the wood, allowing its character to emerge.

Historically, shillelaghs were carried as walking sticks, symbols of identity and practical companions on life's journey. While traditionally associated with blackthorn, Terry's use of hazel draws upon a different strand of Celtic heritage. In folklore, hazel was believed to possess magical qualities, offering inspiration, insight and a connection to the natural world. These contemporary interpretations honour the spirit of the shillelagh while celebrating the mythology, craftsmanship and landscape from which they arise.

Terry Larwood's artistic practice spans many decades, and encompasses sculpture, ceramics, and nature-inspired forms. His work is rooted in close observation, patience and a deep respect for traditional craft.
